Astrology is more than just bad pick up lines and crystal balls. In fact, many people use this ancient art not only to better understand themselves, but to better the choices they make. Using astrology, anyone searching for guidance can look toward the night skies to gain insight into their lives and future.

Astrology is the study of the relationship between the arrangements of star and planets and human beings. Astrologists contend that the position of the constellations during an individual’s birth determines their personality, finances, success and love life.

When most people think of astrology, they think of zodiac signs. The zodiac, which is a 15 degree wide band of space that encircles the earth, is divided into 12 sun signs, that are related to the constellations. They are termed “sun” signs because the location of the sun during a person’s birth is used to designate their sign. Zodiac signs, associated with certain planets, symbolize distinct personality traits the newborn will inherit.

Each sign in astrology is also associated with the four elements, which allows for even more insight into a person’s personality. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, known for their spirit and energy, are associated with the element of fire. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are the connected to the earth element, which is symbolic of material goods and security. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are linked to the air, for they represent intellect and communication. Finally, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are water signs and therefore have emotional and nurturing strength.

In astrology, the geometric relationship between planets is also key to determining a person’s destiny. Astrologists believe people receive different energies from the planets that influence life events. A particular planet or the way it is arranged among the other planets can either be “sympathetic” or “unsympathetic” to a sign. Sympathetic arrangements will bring forth good fortune to a person under that sign. On the other hand, an unsympathetic arrangement can result in an individual experiencing difficult circumstances or even catastrophic events.

A horoscope, or personal birth chart, is an instrument used to measures the arrangement of these planets at the time of a person’s birth. Many online venues exist that offer professional horoscope readings. For example, Astrology.com offers a free reading of personal horoscopes for its members. Here visitors only need to type in their personal and contact information, select their preferred subscription and they will receive instant, free feedback. Because this astrology technique involves many elements, sometimes the easiest way to interpret a birth chart is through a professional in the astrology field.

Many online resources are available for budding, as well as experienced, astrologists. For many people, astrology provides the means to discover themselves and their future.
