People have long looked to the stars and planets for information on how to organize their lives, such as when to plant crops or expect the first snowfall. The moon's pull moves oceans and the moon's phases affect behavior in all animals. Some people believe heavenly bodies affect us even more deeply, and their movements may give clues into the future, as well as govern aspects of people's personalities. One ancient method used for interpreting the cycles of the planets and stars is Chinese astrology.

It is easy to find the correct astrological signs for different people by doing an online search for Chinese astrology. There are many free websites that will calculate the correct signs based on people's birthdays, and some will even calculate compatibility for two people. Chinese astrological signs are assigned by year of birth as calculated by the Chinese lunar calendar. There are 12 signs that repeat in order; Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each sign has certain characteristics accredited to them by Chinese astrology which influences the horoscope of people born in that year. While some of these animals may sound like they would have insulting qualities to Western cultures, all are seen to have positive attributes by the Chinese - though they all have faults as well.

There are two stories explaining why the astrological signs of Chinese astrology are assigned to the years in that particular order. One story states the 12 animals were arguing over who would get to be first in the order. The gods finally put a stop to the argument by decreeing the animals would race across a river; the order they got to the other side was the order that they were assigned years. The other story about the signs of Chinese astrology says when Lord Buddha was preparing to leave this world, he called the animals to him to say goodbye. Only 12 animals came to see him and Lord Buddha assigned them each a year of influence in the order they had arrived to show his gratitude.

Some Chinese astrology websites offer free daily horoscopes while others just have free yearly outlooks for each of the signs of Chinese astrology. Many people check their horoscopes for fun while other, more superstitious, people might decide to buy a lottery ticket if their luck looks good or go out on a date if Chinese astrology indicates compatibility with a particular person. Whether taken seriously or not, Chinese astrology is popular amongst people of all ages and backgrounds.
