The Tzolkin consists of 260 days, which is further divided into a 20 day and 13 day cycle based on the Moon. Mayan astrology is designed around New Age spiritual leader José Argüelles' interpretation of the Mayan calendar, called Dreamspell.
Mayan astrology is similar to Western astrology in that it provides birth charts and horoscopes based on the date of an individual's birth. Unlike Western astrology, Mayan astrology is not based on planetary cycles, but on lunar cycles and numerology. Also, Mayan astrology does not rely on the 12 zodiac signs. Instead, individuals are born under a kin which is represented by a glyph and a number. In Mayan astrology, there are 20 glyphs which are subdivided into four colors, each containing five glyphs. The four colors each have a corresponding direction: Red/East, White/North, Blue/West and Yellow/South. In addition to a glyph, the kin is also comprised of a number from the 13 day cycle, which is any number between one and 13.
In Mayan astrology, a birth chart is useful in providing individuals with information about their personality and character traits. A Mayan birth chart consists of five glyphs in the shape of a cross. An individual's kin is positioned in the center and is surround by four other glyphs known as Guide, Challenge, Occult and Like Minded. Each of these glyphs brings an added influence and strength to an individual's kin.
Free Mayan astrology charts, horoscopes and readings are available online. Two notable websites are Mayan Times and AstroDreamAdvisor.com. Both websites provide free birth date conversion calculators for determining the Mayan kin and in depth chart readings. Mayan astrology isn't as prevalent as other types of astrology, but interest is growing. Fascination with the Maya is not only due to their advanced knowledge in astronomy and mathematics, but also due to their esoteric traditions, rituals, the mystery surrounding their demise, and the upcoming 2012 prophecy.
